RE: [HAPS-L] Serum collection
Thank you everyone for your responses. I simply collected the blood in an untreated (red cap) tube
and spun it down. Worked perfectly.
Alan, I used serum rather than plasma because I thought the clotting proteins would interfere with
the measurement of serum proteins as indicated by the protocol of this test. I've seen similar
suggestions in that vein ( no pun intended) when I Googled serum collection.
Anyways, the lab (spectrophotmetric measurement of serum proteins) was a success. Kids learned
a lot and so did their teacher. That's what it's all about, no?!
Thanks again,

If you put it into a glass tube without anticoagulant, it should
start to coagulate pretty quickly. I haven't done it in mammalian blood
for a long time, but I think in a minute or two it will start. I'm not
sure how long it takes to finish.
A couple of years ago we were collecting frog blood using EDTA as
an anticoagulant. It turns out that EDTA doesn't work for amphibian
blood. The blood was coagulating almost as soon as it hit the glass tube -
there was definite coagulation within 5-10 sec., and the process was
complete in a few minutes.

Sorry to piggback this on Alan's email but I often have trouble posting a
new topic. Anyway, can anyone tell me the fastest way to
collect SERUM from a blood sample (mine). I know if you centrifuge a
blood sample in a heparinized tube that you'll get plasma. And
that if you let the blood just sit in an unheparinized tube you'll get
serum. But what if you don't have a lot of time to wait for all
that blood to clot and settle out? Are there faster methods?
Thanks in advance,

Izak-
The knee link is a great example of good computer-based learning. Thanks for
sending it in.
[We all should be on the prowl for other helpful online learning sites and
send them onto to the list.]
I sent it along to my step-daughter, now a first-year medical student.
