Extra Credit:
- There are very few opportunities for extra credit. However, some extra points may be earned in class through the completion of activities/competitions. Thus, regular attendance is strongly encouraged so that you can earn these points.
- Later in the semester there will be an opportunity to participate in student-run reseach projects on campus. Students in Psychology 230 - Research Methods - will be running their final projects and frequently need students to participate. I will award 4 extra credit points for each experiment in which you participate, up to 12 points. In other words, you can participate in up to 3 experiments for extra credit.
- If you prefer not to participate in experiments, or if you have been unable to due to low demand, you may write a paper in lieu of participating. For each paper you write, you will receive 4 points of extra credit. You can write a total of three papers or some combination of papers and experimental hours, up to three maximum (12 points).
- The article should be a research article from a mental health related journal. That is, NOT a newspaper, Newsweek style magazine, or informational web page. There are hundreds of such journals, but as an example: Schizophrenia; Depression; Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology; Journal of Affective Disorders; Journal of Abnormal Psychology, etc. You will most likely need to go to a university library such as CSUSM, UCSD, or SDSU to obtain relevant journals.
- The assignment is to read 1 article and summarize it: why the study was done, what was done, conclusions, and your thoughts. You must also cite the source in your paper. It shouldn’t be any longer than 1-2 pages double spaced – the assignment is to substitute for an hour of research participation, so you shouldn’t spend much more than an hour on the paper.
